At Hemingbrough Preschool we aim to provide an inclusive and enabling environment for all children with or without additional needs. This is done by making sure that each child that attends the pre-school is assigned a key person. Each key person will quickly build a strong, positive and trusting relationship with their key child and the child’s family. By doing this the key person will gain an insight into whether the child would benefit from additional support.
There is a detailed policy on ‘the role of the key person and setting in’ as well as the preschool ‘inclusion policy’ that can be viewed by parents upon request. At Preschool we have two members of staff that are highly qualified in the Early Years and two members of staff that have their NVQ Level 3 in Childcare Learning and Development and one member of staff who is currently studying and working towards their Level 2 Early Years Educator. Within the Setting we have a Level 3 Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) who works closely with the Early Years Advisory Teacher when needing advice and sharing information about a child’s progress.
At Hemingbrough Preschool we believe that it is important to have good partnerships with parent/carers as well as with the local authority, other professionals and children’s centre. This is so that information can be shared amongst parties concerned. We believe as a Preschool that the input from parent/carers about their child’s learning and development is key to helping their child process through the stages of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Practitioners within the Preschool support children’s learning by carrying out observation and sharing them with parent/carers along with assessments that are carried out termly. We also carry out the two-year reviews that is completed by the child’s key person.
We offer stay and play sessions one week per term so that parents can come along and see their child’s progress and gain an insight into the types of activities that their child enjoys doing whilst in Preschool.
The key person will liaise with the SENCo who is trained on how to offer advice and support to the key person, the child and their family. The SENCo will hold discussions with the parent/carers involved in a confident and sensitive manner that will allow parent/carers to raise issues or concerns. If a referral needs to be made and information shared with other agencies it will only be done with the parent/carers consent. It is the setting manager and the SENCo’s responsibility to liaise with families and other agencies involved that will be supporting the child with their development. When an area of need is identified, the SENCo and the child’s key person will put together an Individual Learning Provision Plan (ILPP) and parent/carers will be fully involved with all aspects of this plan. This will benefit your child’s learning and development as it will set out small achievable targets that will be supported by all practitioners within the setting, parents and other agencies to help your child achieve them.
An ILPP is reviewed half termly with new targets set or the previous targets amended to support the needs of the child. As the main aim of the ILPP is to make the targets that are set are achievable so that you and your child can celebrate the progress that has been made in relation to their learning and development. During the transition period from Preschool to another early years setting or onto mainstream school we would hold review meetings with the Early Years Advisory Teacher, the SENCo in the other setting or the Foundation Stage Teacher in school. This is so that information can be shared as to how to support the child with the transition, talking about the ILPP’s or health care plans that are already in place and sharing information about the child’s learning and development.
As a Preschool we work together as a team to ensure that each child’s individual needs are met through planning and observing adult and child lead activities. We employ staff to work closely with children that need the extra support as well as use funding that is available to buy specific equipment and resources to support all children with their learning and development.
Please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s key person or the SENCo if you have any concerns about your child’s learning and development, this will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. We also have a complaints policy which will provide you with more detail if you are not happy with the service that is been provided by Hemingbrough Preschool.
The Policy folder can be viewed at any time by parent/carers. The aim at Hemingbrough Preschool is to support all children with their learning and development and we feel that this offer is a true reflection of the service that we provide.
We look forward to supporting and sharing your child’s progress on their learning journey whilst at Hemingbrough Preschool so that they can be the best that they can be as we reach for the stars together.
